The autumn term has been very busy for EUJO – We have performed at many public gigs as well as a large number of private functions, supplying jazz to society balls and other events at a wide range of venues.
The Anything Goes Swing Band kicked off the term with a gig at the Old Firehouse, swiftly followed by another one the following week. These included a large variety of tunes, from James Brown’s Get Up and Drive your Funky Soul to Roy Hargrove’s classic, Strasbourg St. Denis. The crowd of students and locals spent both nights funking it up while enjoying late night pizza and local cider!
Having recruited new enthusiastic band members, we started developing our new set for the upcoming big band gigs. Our first Monkey suit gig briefly featured our small band, followed by the Big band performing Jazz and Funk to a packed out bar. The set featured some tight funky numbers as well as modern twists on old classics such as Feeling Good. The set was well received and it was a fantastic start to the upcoming year.
The big band was also the first act to play on the stage at the switch on of the Christmas lights in Princesshay shopping centre, followed by many other local acts preparing the audience for a night of festive events and shopping.
We concluded the term with two more firehouse gigs in fairly close secession, featuring new music including a mash-up of Paul Desmond’s jazz standard Take 5 and Dr. Dre’s Still D.R.E. The final gig featured a nativity themed narration and costume to get people into the Christmassy spirit! The Anything Goes Swing Band will be returning next term.
